What i’m looking forward to for 2011

I should have really done this earlier in the year but it’s been a busy  few weeks.

What album(s) are you most looking forward to in this next year?
Well it looks like Keane will release a new album, also if Kaiser Chiefs release bring  out a new album I will be a very happy person.

What Television show are you most looking forward to in this next year?
Has to be the new Sci-Fi show falling skies anything with aliens in it make me excited. Stephen Spielberg is involved so it has that going for it.
Watch the trailer for it below

What film are you most looking forward to seeing next year?
None unless on the rare chance that either a SGU, SG1 or a SGA film get’s released nothing takes my interest.  Actualy if a new batman film gets release this year, then that would be very good.

What book are you most looking forward to reading in this next yeat?
Fuzzy nation by John Scalzi

First contact with Ewoks

What game are you most looking forward to playing in this next year?
Meat gear solid rising, while it does not have the iconic legend that is snake or while it is not made by the also Iconic Hideo Kojima. It is still a metal gear game which means it will be amazing, or at least will mean i think it will be amazing.
Also mass effect 2 coming  out on ps3 soon that should be good.
Ohhh and also uncharted 3 and elder scrolls 5

That is all. For that.

News of any note
I have the new white lies album, i’m playing it now, not bad I prefer there first album but I still have 4 more song to listen too. So much thinking has been done in the last few days. Nothing learned but a few more question I will need to have answered soon.

While busy the last few weeks, I have been a strange journey, that I am not sure I quite understand fully. I once heard you have to think about something 70% of your waking time to be classed as obsessed. I’m fine then because I at least have 2 things i think of for 45% of the time.

Another Top 5 list

It is a bit later this month I wanted to give the Fat Tim a bit longer on the front page, if you have not read it find it here https://joelhopkins.wordpress.com/fat-tim/ .

So last month it was TV Shows, the month before that it was my favorite Sci-Fi books and now it’s the turn of games. I have being playing games from a very young age, my sister had a PlayStation and I had N64, so I the best of both worlds when it came to gaming. As i grew older I moved on to PC gaming as well as my PlayStation, as I got older the PC went to the wayside and now I only play on my PS3.

A note some of these game are part of a franchise, but for the sake of fairness I am just going to include the best game out of the franchise, otherwise the list would only contain a couple of game franchises!.

This list was a lot harder than I thought it would be to make, I knew from the start what number 1 was going to be. However I have played so many games over the years that, I have an awful feeling I missed some amazing game that I have played in the way in the past.
But first off the games that did not make it on to my list.

  • The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
  • GTA: Vice City
  • Banjo Kazooie
  • Golden eye
  • Mario 64
  • Stargate Worlds (If it had come out)
  • Rugby league 2
  • Tetris
  • Fallout 3
  • Rugby goal kicking on my I-pod
  • Portal

There is loads more but my mind can’t think at the moment

So here is my top 5,

5) Call of duty 4 (Played on PS3)

Man i'm like all mainstream

I know it’s all like  the super popular thing at the moment, but just on the amount of time I have spent playing it means it deserved a place in my top 5 (an accolade that any game is looking for). It’s a fun, it still looks great a few years later. The online multiplayer is addictive and the single player is very atmospheric. Simply a great game.

4) Half life 1 (Played on PC)

"Just step in to this camber nothing bad will happen"

Half-life was game that took me by surprise I actual can’t remember why i got it, I just got one day. I always have fond memories of the start the game, it real made you feel like you was going in to a massively secure research base, moving through massive metal doors, going further and further down underground. The combat and story was top notch. What stood out about half life was that it was just all shooting; they were lots of puzzles some quite hard when first played it (I was young). Apart from the fact that there was lots of scientist in the game and yet only 3 faces for them (kind of confusing) it is an amazing game that I could still play today.

3) Devil May Cry 1 (Played on PS2)

You know he is going to beat the hell out that spider

During one School Holiday one day I became very ill and this game saved me, it was the perfect game to play in the midst of flu haze. Dante simply put is so damn cool. Anyone who has played the game will know the awesome pure fun of the game. For a hack and slash game it had a surprisingly good story. The mood is set by superb music and Gothic setting with a strangely large castle. The boss battle can only bested by the game in number 1 spot, but the unadulterated action and evil puppets mean it’s in my top 5 list.

2) Star Ocean – Till the end of time (Played on PS2)

I remember seeing this poster in a playstation magazine it made me want the game.

Ahhh Star Ocean an RPG to kill all other RPG.  A story of a boy who was on holiday, who through an attack on the resort, the boy ended up on a medieval like planet that is torn apart by war; pretty simple really!. Got to say the ending blew my mind a little! I have really lovely memories of playing this game, but can’t remember all that much about it. I would replay it but the disc no longer works.
And now for my number 1

1) Metal Gear Solid  (Played on PS1)

When I started the list there was one thing that was fixed in place and that was my number 1 spot. Without doubt my favourite game of all time. I was 7 when i first played this game I know sure everything is better when you’re that age, still it was freaking awesome. Its chock full of classic moments such as psycho mantis (A guy in a gas mask clearly in to bondage) reading the memory card (the ultimate mindfuck), the battle with Metal gear Rex and ninja. The game has comedy – Otacon peeing himself. Action -Boss battles. Stealth – most of the game. The story is still one of best seen in a game. It’s also one of the few games where all of the sequels are as good as the first; my real top 5 would be made up of all metal gear solid games. I have played this game more times than I care to admit and it still plays well 12 years after its release date.

Well there it is my top 5.

Will Blog again soon probably a more personal one.

A nuclear blog

“Peter Sellers as 3 diffrent characters you could say he was the Eddie Murphy of his day”

Last night I watched the Stanley Kubrick classic Dr. Stranglove or the full title Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. It was the first time I watched the dark comedy about nuclear war and the cold war. Staring Peter Sellers as 3 diffrent characters you could say he was the Eddie Murphy of his day.

The subject of nuclear weapons, the destruction that they can cause has always been something that has been in my mind from an early age. As has the nuclear deterrence theory. I would guess this was due to me playing the very anti nuclear weapon video game Metal Gear Solid when I was 7 (bad parents). God i really love that game, I am sure i will talk about it more in a later post.

The film was definitely not a laugh out loud film, in fact for most of the film I was filled with a dread at what nuclear weapons could do the world, I got a feeling at the pit of my stomach, of a deep fear, something which I normally reserve for large spiders and the thought of been abducted by aliens. It’s honestly a real fear i have, I am sure there will be a phobia word for it. God help me if i was alive during the cold war, I doubt i could have never slept at night. The premise of the film is that a mad General decides to take first action against the Russians, he does this by launching his bombers to attack Russia, without the President permission using a loop hole called “plan attack R”. The General thought that by doing this it would force the President in to launching the rest of Americas nuclear weapons before the Russian retaliate. Lots more happen including an unmanned nuclear doomsday weapon that would wipe out all life on earth. This was clearly part the inspiration for Metal gear solid which follows a similar story thread in the game PeaceWalker (which incidentally (more intentionally)includes a character called Dr. Stranglove).
The nuclear deterrence theory is basically like two men holding a knife to the other ones throat, both men could kill each other and if you attacked first you may even have a chance of killing the man before he could attack, you but there was still a very good chance he would react and kill you. So you both stand there knowing the other man could kill you, keeping the weapon in hand.
An unmanned weapon is one hell of a scary thought, something that would take human element out of the deterrence theory, which I suppose is the one week link in it. I very much doubt I would be able to push a button that would destroy the world. But if a machine was in in controlled then there would be no doubt  they would destroyed you if you took action. Even though we are not in the grip of the cold war and the threat of nuclear war has wavered slightly, it is still there. Now the places that I feel would still have the balls or are just that crazy enough to use them have them like N Korea.

Shit i am not going to get sleep tonight am I.

I hope to god that we don’t renew trident the money could be spent in a lot more productive way. Oh and i would recommend that you watch Dr. Stranglove.
