A good day for English rugby

It was a great day for English rugby fans on Saturday. I woke up at the early time for myself at 8 in the morning to watch England vs France. It was a predictable match, quite dull, even though there was a surprising number of tries for a match. England lost in the quarter finals and never once looked like they could beat a dominate french side. So the team was unable to emulate the success they have the previous two tournaments (Runners up (2007), Winners (2003)). After the match i yawed, had something to eat.

Afterward i headed to Headingly to get on a coach to Old Trafford to watch the engage super league grand final. In case you don’t know there is two codes for the sport of Rugby, League and Union. One of them get’s next to nothing in terms of media attention, and the other well it’s played down south so it gets a lot. The Super league Grand final is the end of the season match, to crown the super league champions, the super league is top league in the England rugby league, leagues (confused?).
So my team Leeds Rhinos managed to do the unthinkable, after finishing 5th in the league they managed to beat 3 teams in sudden death games, to get to the super league grand final. They broke records before they even got out on the field by becoming the lowest place team ever to get to a grand final. They were winner in a way before they even got there. If they won it, it would meant they would won the super league grand final more times any other, basically meaning they are the best team of the modern era.

There was more than enough back story to make this game a real classic, players on both side was leaving, records to be broken, and St. Helen’s did not want to lose 5 grand finals in a row.  For the first 40 min’s the only thing separated the two teams, was a superber try from the “road runner” of rugby league, little Robbie Burrow. The try for leeds is being, called perhaps the best ever scored at such an occasion, i can’t disagree with the statement either. At half time the score was 8-2 to leeds, and at the start of the second half, St. Helen’s showed what a great team they was, with 20 minutes of pure pressure on the Leeds line. With only 20 mins to go Leeds was 8 points behind with the score at 8-16, but if St. Helens showed was a good side they were, Leeds did the same and then some more, 4 unanswered try’s gave Leeds the title for the 5th time in 8 years. I suppose the score line did flatter Leeds, but no one can deny they were the best team. The match is been called the best grand final, i can’t say i disagree with that either.

A familiar sight

I was such a proud fan, i was one of the many fans that gave leeds no chance of wining the super league grand final, let only get there 8 or so weeks ago.  That is why i’m a fan though, i don’t make the choices and rightly so, our coach has gotten a lot of flack, some of it deserved at times though, but he did not let it get to him and stuck to his guns, and the side showed what a true champion side they are.

Song of the month – October – And other news of note

A band that i liked, but i have not heard of them for a while “Fun.”, a quick look on the internet showed that they have released a new single. The song “We are young” which features another song of the monthie – Janelle Monae. The song is not normally one i’d like, but the fact it’s been in my head for the past few days must mean good things, i’m looking forward to listening to the rest of the new fun. album.
Any way here is the song.

And a long over due

Other news of note
Leeds are surprisingly in another final this year, getting to their 6th Grand Final in 8 years an amazing achievement, they will be playing St. Helen’s who are in their 6th consecutive appearance, amazing (having lost the last 4, 3 of those to Leeds)!! I will be off on Saturday for the match.

Hope you enjoyed the photos from Rome.

No luck on the job front…

I’ve just ordered a book

I think the cover tells you everything, you need to know about the book. The purchase brings me on to another point, a couple of weeks ago, i did a top 5 comedy TV programs, for some strange reason i completely forgot about Alan and missed him out of the list. He should have be straight in at number one, which would remove extras from the list.

Nothing much has happened on the writing front, which of course get’s me down, but i keep fighting my corner against the doubts in my head that i’m not good enough.

The Kaiser at the Abbey

“his voice is like a manly angel”

In 3 weeks i have seen 3 of my top 5 bands; not bad going for me. On the 26th of August i saw Muse, the following Wednesday i watched arcade fire, and now on Saturday i saw the Kaiser Chiefs, back in their hometown of leeds. This was first gig they have done in Leeds since they played Leeds festival 3 years ago; which i was also at. It is the fourth time i have seen the Kaiser Chiefs, and what made this event a little bit different was the venue; they play at the quite lovely kirkstall abbey.

Kirkstall Abbey

While very nice to look at, a very old abbey is not a typical place for a rock concert. The uneven ground made for strange views of the stage at some of the places. The setup of the official merchandise store was in a silly ass place, so if you wanted to stand halfway back you would get a piss poor view. The entrance was 10ft wide, not a major problem when entering, with different people coming at different times, though once the gig finished and 10,000 people leave; a big problem. Looking around there was many more places where they could have built another exit, so it was a problem that did not need to happen. Also one large beer tent was not enough for the volume of people. A couple of people that was stood next to us, left and came back an hour later with some beer, they stood there and complained about waiting for an hour, i’d be annoyed too; however who in their right mind will queue for an hour for some expensive and watered down beer?

All lit up

For all the complaints about the venue, the abbey really did look good! The abbey was not in the background of the stage, but it went down one side of the audience; at first i was felt it would have been better to have it in the back ground, but in end i felt that seeing the abbey in all of it’s glory helped the atmosphere. .They lit the Abbey up, the colours light on the abbey kept in line with the stage. Also i hear (but can not confirmed because of where i was stood) that Ricky Wilson the lead singer, climbed a part of the abbey and sang from it, to make a change from his normal stage climb.

Energetic

The performance was as i expected from the band that gave me my favorite live performance , it was fast, loud and full of their typical energy . They played all the favorite songs from the previous 3 albums, along with a number from their excellent new album – The future is medieval. While i understand that lots of people,  don’t like the constant sing-along hits they have, people call them “fast food” music, but i’m not one of them. I’m sure i’m not going to change their minds, all i can say is watch them live and listen to the new album. The reason Chiefs are such a good live band, is Ricky Wilson; he is great with the crowd, and as a lead singer his voice is like a manly angel (strangest analogy yet?).

This gig was never going to be as amazing as Leeds festival 2009, when i was feet away from the stage and being lovingly crushed. It was still great, however the people was slightly quite, but then again i was quite far back  and there seemed to be a lot of movement and sound further ahead. I love the Chiefs, my love wavered during their hiatus, but the new album and seeing them again in this great venue, has rekindled my love of them.
Hope to see them for a fifth time soon.

And now for something completely different

John Cleese was in my town, and by town i mean city, and by my and mean my neighboring city. It was not something i planed, i knew that my dad was off, while my dad did not. Since my Mum does not like any of the Monty Pythons, or even fawlty towers! (i know) Anyway i was able to go in her place.

So at the Grand in leeds, me and my dad went to see the withered (actually not bad for his age) old man try to make some money, in the wake of his recent divorced. He Joked about it, it still felt a little awkward, while honest it makes you feel at unease to hear him say “i’d rather not be here”. So he went on to the show. He talked about what you would expect, his childhood, Monty Python, fawlty towers and then A fish called wanda. It was shorter than i expected coming in at a round 1 hours and 30 mins. The old git was kept to his script, not once mention the area he was in, or insulting people off to the bog.  Teleprompter’s were station in two places. He was really funny though, I don’t know if he wrote this show, but if he did he has still got it. If not his timing is still great. He showed some classic scenes from lot’s of his different projects. The clips shows that good Humor is timeless.

It did end all so very suddenly one minute, he talked about killing dogs the next second he said “goodbye”; and was gone. He was an ex host, gone to the big Theater in the sky.

Ohhhhh…… I also found out his real name is John Cheese!

I very much enjoyed the show. Another note must go to; how good the grand in leeds looks, only my second time there. It is absolutely beautiful.

Leeds festival 2011 – My thoughts on the line up

Is this line up a hit or a miss?

A quick post just giving my thoughts on the recent Reading and Leeds line up announcement.

This year, unlike the last two I won’t getting a weekend ticket for the local music festival. I decided last year that i was not going to go for the weekend, but I did decide that i would most likely still be getting a day ticket.  I knew that unless they announced a-Amazing line up that this would be the case. So I waited for the announcement, Monday evening after i got home from work. And while it was leaked earlier i still waited to see if that was the correct.
I read carefully, looking at all the bands and decided it was not for me! While one of the headliners (Muse) are in my favorite bands, very few (I counted 4 ) would even make it in to the top 50. Those bands were White lines, the Offspring, 30 seconds to mars and Jimmy eat world.  The rest are in theses three categories;

  1. Bands i really dislike, My chemical romance (every song but that na-na-na-na na I kinda like that), Peter Doherty, panic at the disco and Bring me the Horizon.
  2. Bands I don’t mind but i hardly listen to, The Streets, The Strokes, Pulp, The naked and famous, Elbow (could actually be in my top 50; if I knew more of their songs), Enter Shikari, rise against, The pigeons detectives. There is more too.
  3. Lastly bands there is a few bands I have either never heard of not heard one song by them.

In summery, I love muse and I really like a few, but the rest I could not give shit about the rest.
So you know what I decided, a day ticket. I wanted to see Muse again so I will go on the Friday to see them. All this will save me quite a bit of money. There is the case that I can’t be bothered either.

Is this line up a hit or a miss? for me it more miss than a blind baseball trying to hit a ball from a wayward pitcher.

Other news of note
I’m currently reading the moon is a harsh mistress. Verdict so far – Poor

Had a driving lesson today went well

Buster (my dog) has finally gotten his bucket off his head (coincidently also called a buster) and he looks old self, minus half a jaw of course.

Leeds lost again taking the record to 3 wins to 3 losses, not the best start.

The ratings of Stargate universe keeps getting lower and lower. It really hurts me to say but this could be the end of the franchise (I think I will post something on this next month)

Nothing much happing on the writing front. Got a few good ideas down, some may see the light of day in some format some most likely won’t.

Song of the month – March

A quick post to start the month off!

The start of march……. yey!

The second edition of my song of the month blog, goes to a song that I found strangely by; the title. The song is called Leeds United! While it has little, if anything to do with my football club of choice, it’s a great song. By enjoying this song by Amanda Palmer, I found out about her other songs in her album which I later bought.

Here is the song

I like the so called story behind the title, Ricky Wilson of one my favourite bands Kaiser Chiefs apparently gave her leeds shirt!

She is very unique looking and sounding, as you can see. Also she is married to a great writer; Neil Gaiman

Annoying

Quick post

It looked like yesterday I would have got a job, only for 2 weeks over Christmas, but still a jobs a job, however thing went wrong. So first off they rang told me the details and that I would have to go to the reeds office in leeds (you see the job was through reeds employment). They told me what some of the things I need to bring in me was (passport, bank statement, passport size photos and national insurance card) and then they told me they would send an e-mail out with the location of their office and a confirmation on what is needed to the appointment. So I paid for £5 for and got some passport size photos while I waited for the e-mail, guess what it never came. So I had to look on google maps to find the location of their office.
The Next day I get to the location and guess what? The building is closed down. “WTF!” was my thought, so i had to ring my mum to get her to ring them to ring me back to give me there new location, so after about half an hour of faffing about I final got to the location. It was quite a nice office located at Toronto square building, it was near to the location that i had my year 13 prom, I digress. Once in I proceeded to wait for over half an hour. Then when I finally got in gave them the “correct” documents they told me they would not be able to take it because my bank statement was over 3 months old! Honestly it was 4 months old and they would not take, maybe it’s not there fault, they did not make up the rules, there conducting the interview for someone else. Surly it would make sense for them to tell me before though, so back home I went, so it is there fault actually. Ahhhh so that was a big fail.

This week has been so strange, it started off with a huge high and has got lower and lower for me. Really hope the weekend is better.
