Shows that ended to soon

John is contemplating what could have been for these series

Firefly
A obvious choice, this would be in most peoples list of shows that was canceled way to early, which does beg the question “why was in canceled?”. I’m not sure, but i do know it was entertaining  show with an excellent plot and characters, unlike some show in the list though it did get a chance to finish the story in movie form.

Stargate Universe
I’v talked about this loads in the past and you know i pissed it’s ending.
So i’l let gateworld talk for me

Gateworld gives a well thought out peace on mistakes they felt were made by Syfy that directly effected the Stargate universe cancellation  http://www.gateworld.net/news/2011/05/how-wrestling-is-killing-science-fiction/
Syfy responded with this http://www.gateworld.net/news/2011/05/an-open-letter-to-stargate-fans-from-syfy/

All is well and good until one of the stargate universe producers pointed out some flaws in Syfy’s argument  http://www.gateworld.net/news/2011/05/stargate-producer-responds-to-syfys-arguments-for-sgu-cancellation/

I’m non the wiser, all i know is a good show was canceled.

Lie to me
At least this show did get three season, but the show was built on Tim Roth, i still think it has more to offer than just the paltry 48 episodes it was given. I don’t feel their will be any be gaping plot lines left dangled when this one finishes.

The Chicago Code
Going to be honest and say i have only seen one episode of this show (it’s only just aired in the UK) but it was amazing so after watching i thought i’d research the show a little more. Only to learn that Fox had canceled it after 13 episodes, this is when also learned of Lie to me cancellation.

FlashFoward
Boy was i pissed when this finished, massive cliffhanger and we were non the wiser on the whole situation.

John From Cincinnati

Still not met anyone who watched this show, but it was about…… well i think it was about the second coming of Jesus. Through the episode that aired it was basically hinted that he could be anything, John was a little bit mentally disturbed. It was a very intriguing show, i just wised that the series creator would come out and say who he was.

Still has the best opeing of any show, that’s including true blood.

The Class
The Class did not too well but three of the main actors did fine out of it, one is in walking dead, another in modern family, and one is in the event; the rest probably not so good. It was a funny show that used to air just before i went to class (talk about irony(is that irony? i’m never to sure).

My thoughts on the networks

The networks seem to think that their doing us a favor giving us programing, there not, when there is so much choice now a days; we are doing them a favor. When you have a show that still has at least million of viewer; just in one country, i feel that they have a duty to allow the show to have a proper ending. They should Give the show enough notification to finish the story or give it a mini series to end it. Otherwise all the hours people spent watching your show, are all for naught. Networks are on a path of ending shows way before they should, with only a select few show getting a good run, and they normally get milked to death. People already watch on the internet, and more people will start doing that if they if they are not allowed to get invested in a show.

Top 5 movies (adaptation)

It’s the end of the month’s and you know what that means, my top 5 list. I have decided to do this at the end of each month. There is only so many top 5 list I could do (not strictly true but there is only so many general list)so I’m going to do more specific top 5 list’s much like my first list which was just sci-fi books. So this month it’s movies, but only remakes of older movies and adaptation’s of books, comics, games (sadly non of those) and other material! Not all of these have I seen or read the source version but i know it was based on something and that they are bloody good films.

5: Jurassic Park

Hey you guys!

The book is on my to read pile, so I can’t compare it with the book, however as movie on it’s own merits it’s very enjoyable. Honestly (would i lie) I can’t think of one other movie is this good and has dinosaurs, I mean dinosaurs are cool because they just eat you no reasoning with a t-rex. I mean why the hell did evolution decide to turn them in to chickens!

4: Shawshank Redemption

Who should have been in the film!

Personally I feel it would have been a better film with these to actors in it! Based on the Stephen king short story Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. Again I have not read the original material, it really is a damn good film. “Well made” is how I would describes it, while it is not what I would class as a classic on paper, it might be seen as a little slow. However when watching it you go in to that timeless zone that people go to when they are enjoying a film, something that does change after countless viewings
Where did Tim’s Robbins go after this film I have not seen in any thing after this, tell a lie I did see him in Zathura (I want to forget that, I’m sure he does too).

3: Watchmen

"on the watchtower"

For this one I can compare the film to the great graphic novel (a comic book). It is a great film, I do know some people think other wise, but their wrong. The setting, the music, the action and the story are all perfect in this film. Maybe it goes on too long and it’s a strange at times, then again the comic book is also very strange at times. It’s stays very true to source material, other than the end. Personally I liked fake interdemensional aliens more.

Time for a brake form the list for the worst movie adaptation of all of time!

Dune

Such a Gay film

Oh David lynch how did you take my favourite book and turn it in to a mess of poor nonsensical narration and strange homosexual themes. This film is infamous for have Sting in a stupid thong thing (see above). I like it when a film can go away from the original material, but you need to still stay true the essences or if not you better be a great film, but in this film instead of changing an idea to another idea. They keep the idea, do it another worse way which makes the films complex story make no sense There is to much narration in this film; narration to my mind has always been a poor and lazy way of moving the story along without actually showing it. I HATE THIS FILM :( it had so much potential. One good thing about it is that the special effects they are still quite cool.

2: Serenity

I actually love her :P

Based on the short lived TV show firefly (see: https://joelhopkins.wordpress.com/2010/09/26/top-5-tv-programs/) it apparently is what season 2 would have been, I really wish i could have seen it in a series because a lot of stuff happens in this film.  It has a lot of surprise along the way, i’m sure Joss Whedon would not have chosen all the story to have been in film form. It does still do it’s job by creating a semi satisfying and entertaining ending (well somewhat) to the story which had built up in 14 episodes.  How hot is Summer Glau, I have a such a large crush on her, hell don’t all male nerds have one?

1: Lord Of the Rings

I’m sure I don’t need to say much about this. Best movie trilogy , I think so! It top my list as i’m sure it will top lot of other list’s. A real epic of a film.

I did say i was not going to say much about it.

OTHER NEWS

Going out round wakefield (watch coppers) tonight for my friends 19th, looking forward to it :)

SNOW SNOW you cancelled my driving lesson
But you made the ground all pretty
But then people steeped on you
And you became a sludge
That i will slip and fall on
When i’m pissed

Top 5 TV programs.

First up, I am really gutted that Leeds Rhinos season is over now, not much i can say about it just hope next season is better. UPDATE: It was.

Following last months post about my top 5 Sci-fi Books, I thought I would follow it up with another Top  5 this month. So this month is my favorite TV shows past and present.
But before the main list, another list of shows that just missed out on that most important of accolades, my personal top 5.

  • Fringe – A super cool Sci-fi mystery program, the reason it missed out was because there is so far only two seasons. If it keep up the standard in the next few season I could see it sneak in to the top 5.
  • Blackadder – Amazingly funny, well written and witty.
  • Firefly – Another one that came close, if there was just a few more season of it I’m sure it would have made it in. DAM YOU FOX.
  • X-files (seasons 1-5)- Yes another Sci-fi, the reason it’s season 1 to 5 is because I have yet to watch 6 to 9, but i have them on DVD so i will be watching them. A really good program, very solid and similar to Fringe.
  • Rome – Not normally in to the historical drama’s, the HBO style it makes very enjoyable, sexy and violent.
  • Family guy – Do i need to say anything?
  • Heroes – The first season was amazing, it failed to deliver after that.
  • Chuck – Comedy spy program, would recommend to anyone. Easy watching.
  • House – Love Hugh Laurie he really makes this show tick with his fantastic character. Every episode is very enjoyable.
  • True Blood – Not in to the whole twilight and vampire thing,  this show while very graphic is a great drama, another HBO hit.
  • Lie to me – Like House another show that has a British lead and a super character that makes the show.

I think that is everything but I am sure I have missed something out I have watched so many TV shows.

Right on to the list.

5) – Lost

Lost

Bad ending

Was really not sure whether to put lost in my top 5. After the ending which I don’t want to spoil for anybody, I really wanted to forget I ever watched lost. Was it that bad, yes, it was not awful by any means. Just poorly done, it was so predictable. Everybody said it would be something to do with the afterlife (sorry for the spoiler). I bet that after the first season when everybody said it was to do with the afterlife the producers shat themselves, so they say it’s not to do with that and it’s all hunky dory. They should have just kept there mouth shuts. But in fairness to Lost you can’t just judge the whole series on the ending and it was a great program, sure they made the series a little slow paced in season 2 and 3. The show had great mystery, writing, pace (after 2 and 3) and acting. That first season still rates with me as perhaps the greatest first season of any show, i suppose it could only go down from there.

4) – 24

24

He is so cool

Not a super smart spy but fucking cool. Jack Bauer maybe the toughest, bad ass TV character of all time.  The show builds tension like no other. Some shows might never let the hero lose, but 24 never lets the hero win sure he saves the day… some times (Lot of people will die on the way good and bad) but his life is never better for it. He normally has to go in to hiding at the end of every day because he beat the crap out of some witness or politician OR maybe he has to do some bad things to save his family.

One of the unique things about 24 is that it’s in real time 24 episodes, an hour each, all set in the same day. It’s a very clever idea.  My life got a lot less tense when they stopped making 24.

3) – Life on Mars

Life on mars

"You great... soft... sissy... girlie... nancy... french... bender... Man-United supporting POOF!"

The only English entry in to the top 5. Unlike 24 this is a very smart show. The story like Lost introduced a mystery and the ending was very similar but it was done right (Not just given 5 min at the end of 6 seasons :@).  While I was not alive in the 1970’s everybody I have spoken to that was alive during that period, does compliment how accurate it is, while sometime exaggerated. Lots of people credit the show success to Gene Hunt but i think the character of Sam Tyler is more interesting . A very enjoyable show that has given us some amazing quotes, some that I use more than I should.

2) – Farscape

Farscape

Sexy in space

The most obscure show on my list. Anyone that has watched Farscape, will know that there is no other show like it. The show takes a present day human and puts him through a wormhole that takes him across to the other side of the universe where strange looking aliens live and human like aliens but they are cold blooded. You really have to watch the show to get it. It also has a great use of puppets which you expect with it being made the Jim Henson company (Muppet’s fame). A must watch for all Sci-fi fans, and even if your not a Sci-Fi I would still recommend it.

and at number 1 is ………………

1) – The Stargates

Stargate

Universe Just one of the three stargate shows

I have a feeling that to my friends this is not going to be a huge surprise.
I really had to put all three stargate show in to one spot, it would not be fair on the other shows to have the top 3 spots taken up before they even started. It is a show i have watched since i was 7. The first show stargate SG1 took place after that blockbuster movie of the same name staring Kurt Russel. I am not going to go and on (Do i here cheers?) because being honest i’m a heavily biased stargate fan boy, that thinks the show can do no wrong, well it can’t. It really does have a mix of everything comedy (less so in new Stargate universe), action and hard science (more so in stargate Universe). While i am sure not everybody will like it as much as me, I am confident that if you try it you will enjoy it….. honestly.

Be sure to watch the second season of Stargate universe on SKY 1 on Tuesday Oct 5th at 8pm. You can watch the trailer for the second season in my last post.

Now a little quick life update

Looks like I am getting a cold again, most likely from being out in the cold for the Leeds match yesterday. Not been up to loads lately, anybody got any ideas for something to do? I am up for anything. Job Hunt is on going but no luck so far and again I am up for anything.
