My Birthday

Today, 19 years ago, a boy was born, his name; Joel. Yes 19 years ago I was born. Id just thought I’d inform you all, because you should know when the most important person in your lives. (me) was born. I worked out that you should all be told this information when i awoke and there was not 1000’s of parcels for me to open. I do not expect this to happen next year. Joke but a few comments on my blog would be nice………….

A quick post from my IPod

Top 5 Stargate SG1 episodes

This months top 5 is my favourite episode, of my favourite TV show, of my favourite franchise; Stargate SG1. But let me tell you this it’s not an easy task picking 5 episodes from over 200.

There has been enough of my top 5 for you to know how it works (it’s pretty simple in reality) so without further ado let it commences.

5) Camelot

The Super Gate

The most newsiest episode in this top 5, the season 9 finale and a cliffhanger (The first since season 4). This episode really epitomizes the action and adventure of Stargate SG1. It’s a real fast paced, action packed and few more buzz words episode. The last seasons of SG1, contained some amazing special effects, and just look at the super gate in that photo above.  Camelot guest starring the amazing John Nobel (Fringe and Lord of the rings). Basically in this episode the SG1 crew are on the hunt for holy grail! I know cheesy! But as any stargate fan know a little bit of cheese does not harm the show. In just this one episode, it goes from a sword with a knight, to a huge stargate opening in deep space, to a massive space battle. AND, and Vala is found to be pregnant a real dun dun dun moment. If it was not for me going on gateworld and reading spoilers all the time I would have been shocked at that one. A great end too one of the poorer (that being relative) seasons of the show.

4) Threads

Finally they all get to go fishing.................

The special 63 minuet episode, well if you watched it when it first aired. If the Camelot epitomizes the action and adventure aspect then Threads shows emotion and great story telling in stargate. This episode show the aftermath of the previous two parter “Reckoning”. It  focuses on Daniel Jackson who is for want of a better a word in Limbo, he is given a choice to  Die or become an Ascended being. The catch is that even though you are all powerful, you can’t interfere with us lower beings. It really cleverly done, showing the decision being made in an old american dinner, with lot’s of pancakes.  There is aspects of this episode that Stargate has never tried before and they did work great. Little detailed things such as the newspaper with the current affairs of the universe, gave it strange outer limits feel, which helped to put this episode in my top 5.

3)Window of opportunity

If the Camelot epitomizes action and adventure and Threads epitomizes Emotion, then Window of opportunity really must epitomizes the humor of Stargate. Now Stargate has never been a show that takes it self too seriously but Window of opportunity takes this to a new level. Basically it’s groundhog day in the SGC, only O’Neill and Teal’c can actually remember or know that the loops are happening. With out being clichéd let’s say hilarity ensues. First O’Neill and Teal’c become frustrated, then they have a plan, but before they put it in to action they have a little fun. Some classic scenes in this episode are; WACKO (see above photo), golfing through the Stargate, a bike round the SGC, Teal’c being repeatedly hit by a door and O’Neill getting bored of fruit loops. I find this episode (and the show) more funnier than most of the actually comedy shows on TV, which just goes to show how much depth this program has. It’s not all laugh though with a very emotion moment at the very end of the episode.

2) The lost City

Fuck you Anubis

This is another episode that is all about the action and adventure. Originally this was planed as a movie, and you can see why. The size is that of a movie, a huge space battle; most likely the biggest space battle of the entire series and most probably the entire franchise. The sheer amount of Stuff that happens in Lost city is staggering. Huge game changing events happen. And while so much does happen, like always Stargate manages to get those emotional moment in there. There is a  scene where all of SG1 go in to O’Neill Cabin (when it looks like he will die) they are all joking, and drinking beer; it’s a moment for the long time fan such as my self. These characters are truly best friends, it’s nice to see.  Along with all this emotion and action they also manage to squeeze in a number scenes about a crossword, only in Stargate would this happen.

1) The fifth race

Humans could be the Fifth Race..... They bloody well let any body in these days

While Stargate is a adventure of the week show, it’s always did have a underline story; that of the gate builders, the ancient’s. Every now and then an episode would come along that would explain a little more about them and the mythology of the show (perhaps not enough). These ancient were apart of a group of the most technological advance group of aliens in the universe, the four races. Though at the present day only two of these species still were alive and kicking, the Nox’s and the Asgard.  This episode explains much about the alliance as well as the name of the forth species that was in the group; the furlings, who we find lot’s and lot’s about later on. The Asgard speak to O’Neill as a equal, it’s nice. Theses little gray aliens have been visiting humans for years and have been studding us (creepy but, their nice so i will forgive them).

O’Neill like in Lost City is dying (from the same thing (just 6 seasons apart)), the Asgard do cure him this time. There is at the end a real feel good moment for humanity as a whole is when the Asgard say that we are fast becoming the the Fifth race. I love episodes that delve in to the mythology of the show, the show has got such great back story, and this episode establishes so much of that. I know i’m not on my own in putting this as my favorite episode of Stargate SG1 ever. You may ask if we ever did become the fifth race, well why don’t you watch Stargate and find. It really is a amazing show.

That’s it for another top 5.

Guess who’s Birthday it is on Wednesday? Yup me, I expect many gifts!

Leeds festival 2011 – My thoughts on the line up

Is this line up a hit or a miss?

A quick post just giving my thoughts on the recent Reading and Leeds line up announcement.

This year, unlike the last two I won’t getting a weekend ticket for the local music festival. I decided last year that i was not going to go for the weekend, but I did decide that i would most likely still be getting a day ticket.  I knew that unless they announced a-Amazing line up that this would be the case. So I waited for the announcement, Monday evening after i got home from work. And while it was leaked earlier i still waited to see if that was the correct.
I read carefully, looking at all the bands and decided it was not for me! While one of the headliners (Muse) are in my favorite bands, very few (I counted 4 ) would even make it in to the top 50. Those bands were White lines, the Offspring, 30 seconds to mars and Jimmy eat world.  The rest are in theses three categories;

  1. Bands i really dislike, My chemical romance (every song but that na-na-na-na na I kinda like that), Peter Doherty, panic at the disco and Bring me the Horizon.
  2. Bands I don’t mind but i hardly listen to, The Streets, The Strokes, Pulp, The naked and famous, Elbow (could actually be in my top 50; if I knew more of their songs), Enter Shikari, rise against, The pigeons detectives. There is more too.
  3. Lastly bands there is a few bands I have either never heard of not heard one song by them.

In summery, I love muse and I really like a few, but the rest I could not give shit about the rest.
So you know what I decided, a day ticket. I wanted to see Muse again so I will go on the Friday to see them. All this will save me quite a bit of money. There is the case that I can’t be bothered either.

Is this line up a hit or a miss? for me it more miss than a blind baseball trying to hit a ball from a wayward pitcher.

Other news of note
I’m currently reading the moon is a harsh mistress. Verdict so far – Poor

Had a driving lesson today went well

Buster (my dog) has finally gotten his bucket off his head (coincidently also called a buster) and he looks old self, minus half a jaw of course.

Leeds lost again taking the record to 3 wins to 3 losses, not the best start.

The ratings of Stargate universe keeps getting lower and lower. It really hurts me to say but this could be the end of the franchise (I think I will post something on this next month)

Nothing much happing on the writing front. Got a few good ideas down, some may see the light of day in some format some most likely won’t.

So i’m going to…………

I can’t think of anything to blog, so i’m going to watch Rome season 2. I watched season 1 ages ago and never got round to watch season 2, but got it on bluray so will enjoy watching that.

Ohhh by the by, my dog has come back from his operation, he managed to cope really well. He looks strange yes, but already after a few days i’m use to the new look. Now it’s just a case of waiting and hoping that the damn cancer does not resurface.

Good week, bad week, very bad week

Swings and roundabouts, it’s the story of everybody life. This week has been a perfect example of that. Some good news, some bad news and then some very bad news.

I always start with the good news, so let’s start with that shall we;

Leeds rhinos won, always a good thing. After two poor games against the Quins and the Wolves. The Rhinos came back in style with a 46-12 win over Salford.

A opportunity may have presented it self, let’s say I may be on the radio soon. On a crap non paid role……….. but still.

Yesterday I went to see the punk or kinda punk band the stranglers (been going since the 70’s). They were very good, other than the fact that two of the original members looked close to death. Also many older punks were acting like dicks but that is to be expected at any gig.

So now on to the bad news.

The Japan earthquake and tsunami, awful! And still with an ongoing threat with the nuclear power plant, i’m sure Japan needs some strong support from around the world.  It’s a place I have always wanted to visit and still do it’s very sad to see it happening. Nature is giving us constant reminders just how powerful she is. It’s just scary how some people still don’t respect her. It may be that I read to many apocalyptic books, but i just feel that we can’t carry on the path we are on for much longer, before we are forced to change and fast. Something that will cost many life’s along the way.

But all this has pale in comparison to some news that I got this week.
My best friend, who is amazing and beautiful. My dog Buster has sadly being diagnosed with cancer, now next Wednesday he has to have an invasive operation; which involve removing part of his jaw. The vet say’s it will still likely spread though. Maybe not but “likely”. I love my dog, he is only 12, I feel it’s too young for him to have gotten cancer. It may sound stupid, I know you can get it at any time but it’s what I thought. I’m holding out hope. I love him so much.

Some may criticize me for putting such a personal thing above the life’s of so many humans, but i’m sure many people with pet’s that they love like a family member would feel the same.

I will end tonight’s blog with a few photos of my cute little dog.

Poking – My facebook story

Poking, farmville, invite, invite constant invite. A tag, a link, ten status about the same program. “why don’t we change the profile page, every year” That what they said in the Facebook  development office. Another 50 status complaining about the tiny change. 1000’s of groups joined just because of the thought
i do that too.

A funny video of a cat with thumbs posted on my page.

Another invite to an event with people you don’t know, i click ignore, i seem to do that a lot these days. An email saying you have a wall post, i get curious
someone likes me and i read

“James wrote
James has answered a question about Joel
Joel has new answers to unlock.”

I sigh. Ten more unflattering photos tagged. It goes on…………………

I hate Facebook now. It never used to be like this,  i liked nothing more than to update my status, to let the world know how active and social i was being …… It’s now been 17 days since last status; a unthinkable feet only a year ago. I used to worry that my friends would worry about me, that somehow if i did not post that i was still alive and well twice a day they think me dead, how foolish i was, still am. I update my twitter on the hour; just a change of drug i suppose, just one much simpler.

I think of  removing my Facebook account. I don’t, the thought is still there in my mind, but i download the application on to I-Pad instead. Damn a push notification interrupts my song. Sometimes it get’s mention in a conversation good old Facebook, i try to be cool and state i only use for the chat now-a-days. It’s not completely true, i do occasionally Facebook stalk them girls that i have a crush on. But you can’t very well say that in the middle of a work place, it gives the wrong image of yourself; me hunched over a computer wanking over some girl photo; which FYI i have never done.

I like too poke people and they, me back. Poke a friend that i don’t see as much as i wish or a friends at university. Then you get in contact with them through the poking. It is then that you realize that behind all the applications, (flash games on a social networking site) and spam you get sent, that all your friends still use this shit now corporate site. Damn it to hell i think, i can’t remove my account how ever much i want to. I’m not as strong as my sister who casually removed her page. It’s a sad think that i need Facebook, or i think i do; i’m not sure. You see in my life that the most organised my friends can be is to create a event on Facebook. Without it i would become even more of a social pariah than i already am. Plus there one or two photos on their that make me look passably human, at least some say that.

So what do i do? I ignore it, until it calls me. A push notification, a e-mail or a text asking me to go on to Facebook chat because “it’s cheaper”. No longer are there days where i add people that i barely know; just get my friends count up. I don’t care for Facebook status now, unless i think i have a funny joke. The joke itself might get a few likes but most likely it will add more people to the “add a dislike to Facebook” group. That’s how i use Facebook now, too poke and to chat. Ohhh yes to get poked backed.
How about you?

Now i’m going to try and post something witty on too twitter and get no @ reply’s.

One last thing; R.I.P Bebo and Myspace. I’m sure more will Join you soon.
